Canary Island Cats
During our 2006 holiday to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Keith and I stumbled upon Hans, a German Archaeologist who had originally come to work on the island 15 years ago but now has made his home here and spends his time looking after the feral cats who inhabit the Corralejo Dunes.
He is an amazing person who has dedicated his life to the welfare of these cats and not only feeds them morning and evening but has them regularly checked and treated when necessary by the vet at his own expense.
At the moment he is attempting to have them each neutered to help reduce the number of kittens that are constantly arriving at the feeding points with their mums.
He has built up good relationships with many of the cats and names then all – it is a truly amazing sight to see these cats all emerge from the dunes at 4pm in the afternoon for their tea.
Over the last two years, Andalyn has raised money and collected donations for the Canary Cats which we give to Hans when we visit him each November.
So if you ever find yourself in Corralejo, Fuerteventura with nothing to do – take a trip to the dunes at Olivia Beach, about 3km outside the town, and see for yourself how wonderfully these cats are cared for.
